Ok – food for thought. Sure what the guy is doing in today’s header image (teaching) isn’t anything new, but what if he were privately tutoring someone online. Think about that contextually for today’s post…
I came across a great article on Yahoo! the other day that really had me thinking a lot about what I’m doing right, and what I’m doing “wrong” professionally. Not to say that I don’t enjoy my job (if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be working there – simple as that) – but I do tire of “The Rat Race” some days. It’s winter time now. Some morning I would like to wake up and decide NOT to work because I just don’t feel like it. I don’t have that freedom (yet) in Life, at least not without consequences or some cost to my livelihood.
Their article “Earn more, work less: 8 great jobs that escape the rat race” had so many great nuggets in it that I felt like I should make people who read the Business Section of my blog aware of it. One thing that was said at the opening of the article will probably seriously impact some of the things I’m doing in the next few months…
Nardini got her start as a yoga teacher moonlighting after her day job in cubicle land … “I asked myself, ‘How can I be more passive and less active income-wise?’”
Nardini posted free online videos to gain a wider audience. Now she has 25,000 subscribers on YouTube and 40,000 Facebook followers. She started selling DVDs and teaching at large conferences instead of small classes. She branched out into wellness counseling and life coaching. On a practical level, she set up automatic responses on her website and outsourced all of her administrative work.
Nardini says that fear gets in the way of people actually doing something instead of just talking about it. “People often have skills that they doubt anyone will care about. I advised a friend who loved making bracelets to sell them on Etsy. A magazine featured her work and within a month she had earned more money from her bracelets than she had made in a year working an office job.”
They then go on to talk about 7 more job alternatives that may be better for people’s actual ideal jobs.
I really do feel like the woman they were interviewing posed an excellent thought when she mentioned being more passive, and less active income-wise. Now like I said, I like my job – but how many people seriously sit in school and think to themselves, “My goal in Life is to have a nice desk job one day! Surrounded by cubes on a schedule that I don’t control on my own, pay I don’t pick, and product I may not provide input one
” ??? I’m not saying that NO ONE does this (I’m sure someone out there does), but I feel like that has to be rare.

This list IS NOT all encompassing. Not in the slightest.
Something that’s always been extremely important to me in my walk as a Gentleman has been forging my own path when I feel it’s necessary (because being practical – trailblazing isn’t always the wisest move out there). There’s something liberating about it, and it also forms principles in your daily activities. So setting out on your own to establish yourself in some form of professional work that you enjoy and “frees you up” falls in the category of Gentlemanly Pursuits for me – that’s all.
One final thing to note – I’m not talking about side-hustles. Those don’t solve your active vs. passive income dilemma. These are actual professions people step into and thrive at. Maybe some will work for you.
What do you think of these professions and their potential to get you out of the day-to-day rat race everyone else is in? Do you currently work in, or have you ever done, any of these professions? Care to share your thoughts with us about their earning potential and how much they freed you up? Are the results in this article typical? Tell us in the Comment Section below.
Peace and thanks for reading.
PS: Happy Morning After Christmas by the way.
