I want to begin this post by simply stating that I AM NOT talking about a “murse” (man-purse) - which I’ve written about in the past. I’m simply talking about a bag that men carry things like books, laptops, food or any other items in…

Messenger Bags can be found in a number of materials folks.
A good way to tell the difference between a man-bag/murse and a messenger bag is to look at the list of things I mentioned above – one in particular really. A Messenger Bag should be able to hold a laptop (not a mini netbook) of with a screen of about 15″ or 17″. If it can’t hold anything at least that large, and goes over your shoulder like any other satchel, you’re wearing a murse. That’s pretty much what defines it to me — how much it can hold.

A perfect Messenger Bag...
Messenger Bags are great additions to almost any casual attire you may have. They look nice with jeans and a button up. You can wear them over coats of almost any size or style. They look nice with hats and even cross through various subcultures. Heck – you can even “business” them up a little bit if you’re looking for something like that. I guess it’s no shock – their history considered.
But versatility and history aside, I think the rise in “geek culture” (can’t think of a better name for it) had a lot to do with this being an acceptable thing for men to wear. Think about it – before running a web-based business was a cool thing, and blogging in glasses, etc. became a cool thing to do – how many Messenger Bags were worn by men who weren’t messengers by trade (think bike messengers)? Now you can catch them all over from multiple brands and on a lot of male celebrities.
Yup – the Messenger Bag has come a long way from simply being used to carry messages to now sending them.
A Messenger Bag lets the world know that you’re just chill. You have things to carry, but you want to be comfortable and stylish. You’re also confident, because let’s face it – it’s only NOT considered a murse because it’s a little bit bigger than they are (and you’re cool with that).
I remember my first Messenger Bag (I have like 3 now – two are made of khaki material & one is leather) – it was simple in its design, and made by Dickies. I really wanted the brown one, but I ended up getting the black one (and I still have it to this day). These things are durable and fashionable. What more could a stylish casually easy-going Gent want?
What about you? Do you own a Messenger Bag? What made you get it? Why did you opt for that (or “would you”) over a backpack or briefcase? Tell me your thoughts on this casual fashion staple in the Comment Section below.
Peace and thanks for reading.
