Carnivore, Herbivore, Omnivore.

...[F]rom watching the documentaries I have watched lately, I have a question: If we as human beings are supposed to eat of the earth, then why in the world do we eat as much meat as we do?

Mmm mmm -- "good" or a trap? You decide...

GRDXers,

How goes it? I hope all is well in your world.

Today, I’d like to speak a little about food.

In my last post about food, I ranted a little about being a consistent cooker and how it can benefit your time and your health…

I’ve had some discussions – and from watching the documentaries I have watched lately, I have a question: If we as human beings are supposed to eat of the earth, then why in the world do we eat as much meat as we do?

In the documentary I ranted about in my previous post, there was a lot of discussion about the issues with eating meat, poultry and fish. From the documentary “Forks Over Knives” some of the scientists in the film discussed a link between many diseases and the meats that we eat. There was a lot of evidence given that showed that humans should consume more fruits and vegetables (our green friends), than our darker consumption methods (red meat, chicken, turkey and fish).

Don’t get me wrong, I like meat as much as the next gent but I also am a little more convinced that humans are more herbivores than we are carnivores. Why is that? Well in FOK, people were put on strict diets that were mainly vegetarian, with very little meat and dairy if any. Once these individuals cut out the meats and dairy, their health increased substantially for their benefit. They even profiled a UFC fighter that was completely Vegan (and yes he still kicks butt). Vegan Power (Insert Scott Pilgrim reference here)!

Now, I’m not saying that I suggest you completely cut meats and dairy products out of your diet (because you will do what you want), I’m just stating that this is something you should consider for your health.

Have any of you noticed how you felt after eating a lot of meat and a little veg? Stuffed (not Full or Satisfied), loss of energy, gas, “The Itis” (that feeling of needing to sleep after a big meal), or a general not so great feeling after eating a lot of meat.

Don’t quote me on this, however I believe it takes nearly 3 weeks for our body to digest red meat. Seriously? Check out this article about why we shouldn’t consume red meat.  This is another from MSN

There is even more evidence out there that suggests we should not eat meat at all or drastically cut it down.

Here is my personal tip about eating meat:

I typically only eat one to two forms of meat 3x a week and only 2-3 ounces of whatever it may be typically for me its chicken, turkey, egg or fish. I may eat red meat once or twice a week. I consume more fruit, vegetable, and grain throughout the day than anything else though. Throughout the past few years, I’ve gradually cut meat from my diet (I can’t do it cold turkey). I suggest that each of you try it too.

The more fruit and veg the better. After everything I have discovered about food in these past years, my idea about meat has done a complete 180. I’ve been working to cut most meat out of my diet, however like many things it takes time. That is something else that should be discussed: the “diet”.

I know people that dread this word.

That, however, is for another article.

What is your opinion on humans eating meat? Do you think we should? Shouldn’t? Do you find my discussion crazed or interesting? How does your body react to meat? Post comments and ideas in the Comment Section below.

Thanks for reading!
