“Can You Dress for the Wrong Reasons?” Yes.

I’ve had some stimulating debates with people about whether or not you can dress a certain way for the wrong reasons.  My answer to the title question has always been a simple “Yes you can” – followed up by the following little tidbits I’m about to point out.

And keep in mind I’m not talking about dressing up because it’s required.  If you have to wear a uniform for whatever purpose – then sure that’s fine.  You’re just respecting the position that you’re in during those cases.

Be Yourself

If you’re dressing up to impress someone – you’re dressing for the wrong reason.  Why?  It’s wrong because you aren’t really projecting yourself through your clothes in the fashion that’s most comfortable to you.  If you’re dressing up for someone else – I just think it’s flawed because you’re the one who has to wear the clothes, not them.  Plus, that person doesn’t really like you “for you” at that point.  Whether it’s romantic or friendly, never dress up to fit someone else’ ideal unless the juice is truly worth the squeeze (“The Girl Next Door” anyone?).

If you don’t like cardigans – don’t rock it to appear classy because eventually you either have to “live the lie” or drop the facade.  There’s a ton of examples – but you get the point.

If you’re dressing up for a promotion at work – Depends.  Why?  While you may not ever get that promotion you want, we all have to eat – and most strive for better things in life.  Sometimes these are hoops you may just have to jump through.  Now you may have to wear what we affectionately call a monkey suit day-in and day-out for not, but that’s life.  On a moral level though, who really wants a job where you HAVE to be someone you aren’t all the time?  I know it’s called “work” and not “fun” for a reason – but working in a position that you can’t “find yourself” in can lead to levels of dissatisfaction in places you don’t want ‘em.

Always dress for yourself.  If you have to wear suits – find the suit that fits your personality.  If you have to wear uniforms, spice it up within regulations (don’t get fired for your style – that’s just a bit non-sensible).

I know that’s a short few words – but I just wanted to present the argument to folks.  In the end – be yourself.

What do you all think?

Let me know – peace for now – and thanks for reading.
